I can confirm it's bad karma. biggrin.gif The chest should be locked about 60% of the time. Note that chests that aren't opened are respawned slower, so it may be always the same one you see.

Bad Karma sucks then,

it takes me about 3 trips to town generally, to beat the guards/shamans+guards/goblin lord+pelagons, and the chest has never been unlocked

EDIT:

Woot, I finally got an unlocked one, even if all i got was an iron helmet...

Say if I went in the lair, and killed 2 or 3 pelagons and went back to town to heal, and then went back and killed the goblin lord, would I still get just as much money from him?

Use a Key of Opening and recharge it (sell/buy back) if you don't have any character with Charm of Opening yet. Gold is cheap.

The easiest method I've found for dealing with the goblin lord and all his minions is the static mesh spell. You can get it fairly early in the sorcerer's guild, and for some reason does more damage than any other spells I've tried.
Usually kills the pelagons in one shot.

I've always liked element spells, myself.

(Once my young self figured out how to effectively keep stats high without dying w/ complications, and I could actually use Leprosy, the demo version was a breeze.)

Leprosy is good too, but I have better luck with the electric spells after level 3, and static mesh hits 7 in 4 groups.
Of course, in the demo it's even better, since I don't think there are any electric resistant monsters before floor 4.
Also takes a bit less stats and SP to cast. (I think so anyway, it's been a while since I checked.)

My current character has over 600 total guild levels, and normally explores around floor 13 or so.
(He's an evil elf, and is guild master in all 6 available guilds. Also around 80.000 kills, and I think around 20 deaths.)

Stats aren't a problem, just fight the goblin king on level 3, the shamans in the previous rooms can have a chest with an Aard of being in it. (+1 to all stats, and you can sell them for millions. I have around 800M gold.)

I prefer dust of opening, but the keys are good too. Except you have to equip the keys first. Of course, it really sucks if you have a stack of 25 dust of opening get stolen from you. (Happened to me more than once.)
The dust is also harder to find.

Oh, I know all that. Problem is that I didn't a decade ago tongue.gif

But yeah, electric and poison make it easy mode, for the most part.

Yeah, I realized that a long time ago, that is why I don't usually bother with them anymore. I just gained a bunch of levels in the scavenger's guild. (Current character is an evil elf, so can't join thieves guild.) And got my charm of opening spell high enough so it only costs 9MP. I also have the crest of the scavenger, and it has 6 charges of charm of opening. And it recharges everytime I go back to town. So locked chests aren't a problem for me.
Oh, and I've made a txt list of all the guild crests in the game, including all their spells, and at/df too. If anybody wants it, let me know. I'm working on complete item, weapon, armor, and cursed item lists too. Also doing full color level maps of the laired monsters too. (Only the level bosses, not the lesser lairs.) Got the first 3 done.

I had uploaded my crest list to this site a few years ago, but I can't seem to find it.

Oh, and to point something out about this laired monsters list, not all of these are technically laired. Such as the diseased muck, or the arthopod, or the veyasu. Just to name a few. They are actually just rare monsters, but since they appear in certain places more often, the game kind of counts them as laired. A true laired monster only appears in certain places and nowhere else. Such as the abolith on level 1. Or the goblin king. Starting on level 4 though, most levels have more than 1 true lair.

My maps will only have the true lairs shown, and I colored the rooms red to show them on the map itself.
And included are a servants list, and most common treasures, and strategy to beat them.

The wiki already has maps with color coded lairs, unless the latest batch of wiki-defacing has deleted them. Why people destroy wikis, I'll never understand. rolleyes.gif
I don't remember the Crests file, Braindead changed hosts a couple of times and when that happened I reuploaded all of the files I have (except Moddor which I'll be uploading this week-end if I remember), but I went myself through several computers so perhaps I lost the file somewhere. huh.gif
The wiki and Wabbit's editor have the list of all items with stats already, so the community doesn't need this, for the time being, but if you want to do that for yourself it's perfectly fine! And a rather huge undertaking, I might add.

What about the stud room at 4,8,3? I've found Hennarts there every time.

If that room has "elemental" as its only monster type, the only level 4 elemental is Hennarts. Killarts are level 2, but the lower bound for what can spawn may be greater than level divided by 2. Long story short, though, a monster doesn't have to be laired to be the only possible spawn under certain conditions.

Edit: Wait, wait, air elementals are level 4 too. You should see them on that square occasionally too.

You called it. I saw air elementals there yesterday. But still, hennarts spawn in this room more consistently than Dwarven Lord spawns in his lair.
