MXP files are not on the internet. What we have:

Map editor
General editor (monsters, items, characters, and other goodies)
Hundreds of artwork for old and new items
Hundreds of artwork for old and new monsters
Hundreds of item and monster descriptions, old and new
About a dozen to 2 dozen soundtracks - I don't remember
A handful of partially implemented features
Tons of new code

The caveat to working on this is that we can't release the code to the public. The copyright for the original Mordor belongs to Decklin (of Decklin's Demise) and he has given us permission to use it.

For those who don't know, MXP went into a standstill years ago. The project became overambitious and our efforts came up short. The latest build of the game that I remember had some bugs but was pretty playable. It has 20+ dungeon floors, new items and new monsters (many of which were created but just not incorporated into the game yet).

I would more than welcome someone to contribute to the project. The pieces are there. Someone just needs to put them together.

If anyone codes in C++ and/or VB6 then speak up. Our biggest problem for ages is that we created a lot of content that was never [fully] implemented into the game. Some of these additions are simple. For example, the map editor allows for assigning music to specific coordinates but doesn't yet allow for a random piece to be pulled from a list of several songs. We already have a handful of songs completed - they're just not fully implemented into the game. Other coding bits, such as multi-part monsters, are more complex and only partially implemented. The idea is simple: one monster has multiple appendages that you can attack (i.e. a head, multiple arms, and tail, etc) and each appendage has a different attack. The player would either finish off each appendage or would have to kill the 'core' of the monster to finish it off. The start is there but we need help to get to the finish line. Volunteers are welcome.

We will definitely release an beta to the public for testing. The community can undoubtedly give us a ton of valuable feedback. This project has been long in the making, and so this isn't the first time that none of us has had spare time to work on it. This is, however, the longest that we've all collectively been away from the project. I am positive that we haven't lost sight of the finish line after having put so much hard work and effort into developing this game already.

Great job to everyone who submitted a description (or several) last round. They were all fantastic! The development team will sort through the descriptions and let you know if your description was selected.

This round of contests will be all about thieves - the scum of the depths. We've decided to include a few images per round of contests; however, we will not post an image for every item and monster as we would like to keep some surprises for you to find during the game instead. These images may be helpful for writing your description(s). This round features images for the Thief Sword, Shadow's Blade, and the Pickpocket. happy.gif

Monsters
  • Cutthroat (Thief, level 2)
  • Pickpocket (Thief, level 3)
  • Thug (Thief, level 3)
  • Robber (Thief, level 6)
  • Master Thief (Thief, level 14)


When writing descriptions for monsters of the same class, it is sometimes helpful to pay attention to their specific stats and attributes to distinguish among them. Among this batch of thieves, for example, the Pickpocket has a higher attack than the Thug, while the Cutthroat, Robber and Master Thief are the only ones who can backstab. If you plan to write more than one description, it may also be helpful to create a consistent back story that can be applied to multiple descriptions.

As promised, we are offering opportunities for fans to contribute to development through community contests. We will post batches of items and monsters each round. Some rounds we will post a random selection of items and monsters, while other rounds there will be a theme. Please read through the first post of this thread for rules and guidelines before posting your description(s).

The number in parenthesis indicates what level of the dungeon the item or monster is first found on to guide you in judging its relative power. If you have any disagreements with the classification of a monster, let us know and we will consider your classification.
