Depending on your tastes, I think it's a good idea to have different XP rates. A lot of mechanics in Mordor feel like they're loosely based off AD&D 2e, which I love. For example, in that ruleset, you could only get +1/+2 bonus HP from having high CON, unless you were a Fighter. If you had 16+ in your primary stat for a class, you'd get a 10% experience boost. Fighters and Rogues had low experience requirements, while casters had a much higher requirement. This made classes uneven, and some better and some worse at different points in the game (eg Fighter was strong early but would taper off without spell support eg haste, while Wizards would shine midgame when they start to get Level 3 spells, and the party's total damage per round would be maximized by buffing the physical classes).

It also makes solo play more interesting. smile.gif

Since you asked about the Questmaster . . . I think quests should be retained, but there should be a couple of restrictions to keep the Questmaster from abusing his power:

1. He should not be able to quest you two levels in a row.
2. He should not be able to quest you for a monster or an item that is not yet listed in the library.

I think the QM should assign stuff that can be found on the deepest floor the character is on; maybe 10% of the time have it be 1 floor deeper, regardless if it's been discovered or not. By having him randomly give you a thing you've never heard of, you get those "That exists?!" moments, which you don't see as much of in games these days (mostly due to the prevalence of YT and wikis)

Oh really? I've always just played with a solo character, since Tomes are so annoying to farm. So, it usually starts as a Sorcerer to get the ball rolling, and then I make a legacy character that starts as a Warrior/Sorcerer. Healers aren't really a thing for me, especially with that XP requirement

I usually jump deeper when I can comfortably farm the current level without losing too much health, eg I can clear the major areas in 1-3 trips at most. I also typically descend when I can clear maybe 5-15 rooms without dying.
I mean, Mordor is a grindy game, so to me it's better to do lots of low level fights than dive deep for one fight and risk dying for a marginal reward

How did you get the data for the routes? Like did you manually plug the numbers into an array, or did you read the files from the game directly?

When I was younger I only had the demo version so I played the first two or three floors extensively, including mapping every tile with a seeker. I liked seeing how the map changed between Mordor 2. Having the two additional floors was amazing to me, and sure enough, I ran right into level 4's teleporter and got hopelessly lost and couldn't find my way back safely and always died.

Greetings to all!
I am have decided to finally finish this game after a 7 year long pause, where I had arrived to dungeon level 13.
Alas I have lost all the dlls and vbx files in my previous computer that this game requires to run properly and it is a pain to find them all.

The link you had posted is not working anymore since the server seems to have been gone.
Does anyone have all of these files lying somewhere?
Thanks.

I believe that it's the Visual Basic 3.0 runtime that Mordor runs on, at least according to the title of the OP and a quick Google search.
It might be easiest to run a virtual machine with WinXP since it should be compatible out-of-the-box; I don't think Mordor or M2 were fully compatible with Vista onwards

From best to worst:

Healer/Mage
Sorcerer
Wizard

IMO, wizards experience with spell cost vs the mage isn't an argument. Wizards get one more spell that i wish mages got, and healers get one spell that i wish mages got, so Mages are easily my fav. plus you can charm stuff, which is always a benefit. Healers XP needs are just outrageous however. My elf mage/sorcerer needs a lot of experience but if she was a healer i would cry at the experience. plus the mages guild crest kicks large amounts of ugly people in the face.

I think the high XP ramp on Healers is to make it difficult to extend your trips to the dungeon. Something about how the flow of the game requires frequent returns to town

Sorry to bump such an old thread (well, a lot of threads here are pretty old tongue.gif)

It does raise a good point, that it's important to archive old versions of games and software, since they can be hard to find. We might enter a time where specific versions or entire games are literally lost forever. MyAbandonWare and OldVersion have no hits, so I feel like Mordor is pretty niche as it is, unfortunately.

Mordor doesn't toss drops around like candy (like how Diablo and other ARPGs do), so it's nice when you get a big drop every once in a while

It's unfortunately an older game where certain effects aren't standardized (or at least consistent)

I thought Aards were level 2 nomad?

Anyways, the optimal way to powergame is to achieve your race's maximum constitution+5, then what was it, 28 levels warrior, 30 nomad, 41 wizard? Something like that.

Potions cost no age, but might need a higher level to use, whereas tomes are readily available but age you 4 weeks. Overall, tomes aren't a big deal, since if you're optimizing that hard, you probable won't die too much anyways.

ID it once if you're a library completionist. Other than that, nope, you don't need to fully ID unaligned items.

I happened to peek in over here while visiting another unrelated forum.
The dev forum categories have posts ranging from 2010 to Mar 2016 at the latest. Last activity was ~ 2 years ago.

Just sayin'

I always played solo.

Anecdotal, but I'm pretty sure that larger groups seem to hit harder. If you've ever looked at monster stats in the library, you might notice they have very meagre ATT stats - they seem to miss a lot. I think it was balanced against larger groups being more accurate, in that sense.

Good to see, that there is a forum waiting for a game like Mordor(XP).

The sad thing is, that only 13% want to spent time and/or money (kickstarter). Why is that? The people playing mordor when it came out are between 40-50 now, having a job and hopefully can spend 20$ or for a kickstarter campaign. A shame.

You can't throw money at game development and expect it to work.
There's a lot of failed Kickstarter projects that did a cut & run approach as soon as they saw the dollars roll in. If you want a good game, you need people with passion and commitment. A lot of the team here did it only as a hobby, anyways.

Also Mordor released in 1993? I found it in 2003 when I was 10, and I'm 27 now. You're off by a few decades there.

The only big thing to move over would be characters and maybe store data. Map exploration data probably isn't salvageable but it's easily re-done.

I think I saw somewhere that they aren't allowed to release the partial finished product based on their agreement on the LP.

Call it a finished game, but open source it to the community for "mod support". Problem solved.
It's unfortunate to see a full year go between posts

No idea, seems like it lost a bit of steam around 2009, 2010 at best, and I don't think it really recovered.

I'm still around.

Funnily enough, I was trying to research some old shareware CDs and it was so generic, I thought I'd look Mordor up on Wikipedia to see if it included the CD it was distributed on, but no luck. But, the article had a link back to here so I thought I'd pop in, and ... you posted yesterday! What are the odds. laugh.gif

you are breaking copyrights if you use art or sounds from the original mordor
Of course.

That's why I said to use original assets, eg. art+sound that you created.

Web player, huh? Guessing you're using Unity for this? Can't really test it out, bandwidth is a perpetual concern for me.
Pictures look good though, hope you continue working on it!

Wouldn't worry about copyright. As long as you don't call it MORDOR, it should keep Decklin and Tolkien estate away from your game. tongue.gif
Just use original assets one way or the other, and since you can't really copyright game mechanics or implementation, you're free to pretty much use whatever data you want, methinks.

I always liked messing around with solo characters. I remember being younger and dying to a Giant Centipede because I didn't equip a weapon. But I learned, somehow.

It was fun to mess around and see what guilds you could join at level 1, even if it was awful (Osiri Healer, oh god the XP requirements were ridiculous). I never got very far because of constitution damage and eventual complications. But then I was able to start surviving and eventually farm for Aards.

Good times.

'Sup?

I'd also second the open sourcing. I haven't made anything related to the project for 3 or more years now, and ... yeah. It's kind of stale, IMO.
