Acidic spray isn't that important once you're past the middle of the dungeon. It's a good stepping stone, but you're way past that.

At this point, I'd recommend doing Wizard since I've never known anyone who took it to really high levels and I'd be curious to see what their advantages are.

Yes, that's another reason. I'm actually quite excited to try because of that. The wizard crest is pretty sweet, too.

The highest reported wizard level that I remember was Omer:

QUOTE (omer @ Feb 11 2006, 05:38 PM) *
dwarf:
warrior 464
thief 181
wizard 114 (what was I thinking?? crazy.gif)
healer 194

But maybe I'm forgetting someone.

Incidentally, I built the exact same combo of 385 healer / 509 wizard in Demise (or I should say cleric / warlock), but for different reasons (morkal spells). In Demise the selections of spells and their functions have changed quite a lot, though.

On topic, what I have so far:

8 dragon's blood 1 blessing of morash1 shiny curse of morash 2 ninja's armor 1 magician's armor 1 paladin's armor 1 Pure Mithril 1 Scarab of Life 1 shadow axe 2 eliminator 1 dagger of swiftness 2 boots of the elven lords 1 gold sash

What? No lightning blades?

Go visit some of the tougher Lamurians (Warriors and Lords, and maybe Guards as well)
They drop lightning blades with some regularity.
Upon finding one, give it to your lead Giant (Warrior? Nomad?), buffer it, and CHARGE!

8 lightning blades so far..

My giants like to whack things the old-fashioned way. I have one male giant wielding an eliminator and two girls with giant kings hammers. I don't dare to ask them which one of them is the "lead giant", I'm afraid it wouldn't end well. unsure.gif

Fair enough.

My original party (Warrior, Seeker, Mage, Thief) attacked primarily by Melee.

But at some point I started using Lightning Blades, especially when entering the level 15 lairs. Very little prep time -- it has 35 charges. Just buffer it and go.
That strategy proved so successful that I never even bothered experimenting with GoL, or the other obscure/rare weapons.

More recently my solo Osiri Sorceress (and companions) cleared out lv. 15, casting Electric Field exclusively, spell level 175 or so.

She even defeated the PD... though it took two tries (and her first death).

What is a GoL?

I knew you've made it to 999 with lightning blade and I appreciate your advice. It's a great weapon, for sure. And props for finding out about its uses. I just don't think it fits very well into my own strategy.

My dwarf is able to cast word of death for 12 mana. Three giants can deal *a lot* of total melee damage when they team up. Combined with WoD from the dwarf, this kills nearly everything in one round. If anything does survive, I also have a few companions to clear up the survivors.

There are just two monsters that can live through a round of all of this. And both of them are highly resistant to electricity. Once I have a decent level in the Wizard guild, I can switch to Precognative Death for the DP. From then on he won't survive the first combat round, either.

That leaves just one monster that I can't kill in one round - the big boss. Although I actually may be able to one-shot him too once I level up word of death high enough and once my melee damage improves some more. If not, I'm thinking of giving my giants caps of death..

I used lightning swords for my warriors too. It's only 25% effective against the Big Bad but if you have 3+ characters casting it, it's plenty effective. Its greatest virtue is that it gets rid of the Flame Devils quickly, but your WoD probably does that too.

(Oh. Heh, I already put this on the wiki.)

With your high WoD, you can get by without it.

A lightning blade casts Electric Field at spell level 225. This deals approximately 600 to 1200 damage, so about 900 on average. Since big A is 75% lightning resistant, this means 225 average damage.

At this moment my giants deal about 210 melee damage on average with Eliminator or GKH. That's without counting critical hits. (A giant kings hammer is slightly more damaging.)

So in this particular fight a lightning blade would be slightly more effective, but it's very close. And in the long run, melee will actually become better than LB.

Note that this is only the case for giants. Non-giants can't deal much more than about 150 avg melee damage, at least not without a heap of blessings.

The big advantage of LB, imo, lies in powerlevelling a single character, by using it on lamurians and so on. However, in such fights it is overkill to have more than 1 caster.

I usually use the LB until the big A's little friends are dead and he's left alone... then I switch to good old fashioned bashing (adding as many "run away to heal up" as necessary).

Mean, huh? The description of elves does warn you that there are some items they can't use.. If it's any consolation, the holy sword isn't that great a weapon in any case. If you just want to use it for style, editing the stat requirements for the weapon would be a pretty harmless cheat. wink.gif

You're right. I'm pretty sure I'll use it for like 2 days and then go back to good old avenger.

That thing will surely help, as I encountered 16 golden eagles yesterday... Took some time to find my characters. They feel a little older. pissed.gif

npsuber reported a wizard at 268, but that's still a good 100 or so levels until precognitive death reaches mincost. You'll be breaking new ground!

Thanks. Yeah, min cost for Precognative Death should be reached at level 385, as it costs the same as word of death does for healers. At level 228 now.
