Many monsters appear one-at-a-time.

But what if by some chance a room contained more than one? How would they be listed?

For example, a room may contain one I’ssus. But another room may contain two. Then you would be staring down two I’ssumi.

Here are some one-at-a-time monsters. What are their plurals?

Angel of Death
Asteryex
Beechi
Cockatrice
Cyclops
Elf
Hiksae
Hooded Thief
Jubilex
Mother of Serpents
Phoenix
Que’ssus
Reaper of Souls
Asmodeus

(Bests answers withins a few weeks wins’s).

I'd say exactly the same as Danjen, except: Asmodeus, Asmodei; though it's just my limited knowledge of Latin.

I'm afraid the following:

Beechi
Cockatrice
Cyclops
Elf
Hiksae
Que’ssus

all do actually appear in groups in-game.

Now that's the kind of discussion I'm looking for!

I'd say Danjen is pretty right-on. But I have seen a different plural for the Phoenix.

I could actually tell you straight from the source how they'd be pluralized...

The known ones:

Beechis
Cockatrices
Cyclops
Elves
Hiksae
Que’ssumi

And the theoretical:

Angel of Deaths
Asteryexs
Hooded Thieves
Jubilex
Mother of Serpents
Phoenixs
Reaper of Souls
Asmodeus

You're pluraling some of them in the wrong place. Angel of Death for example, would be Angels of Death, and not Angel of Deaths. This is because Death is acting as an adjective and is describing the noun, Angel. It's the same rule for pluraling mother-in-law to mothers-in-law.

Right, I'm just listing how the game would pluralize them, based on what's in the source. For instance, it thinks that Jubilex is already plural but not Asteryex, and it'll never add an s to something that already ends in s. It also knows to turn anything that ends in "ief" into "ieves". But it has no knowledge of what to do with "x of y", so it adds an s to "Death", but not to "Souls".

Edit: And, in fact, just now I saw 3 Spooks misidentified as 3 "Minion of Deaths".

For sure we can't take what the game gives us.

I think Danjen got em all straight except for Cyclopes (1 cyclops, 2 cyclopes? anyone? ow don't hit me)
And asmodeus -> asmodei that one i'm 100% sure about.

Phoenix: Noun.

Plural: Phoenix/Phoenixes.

Thank you, Wiktionary.

I trust Wiktionary as an authority even less than Wikipedia, and I'm a regular contributor to both. That said, more reputable dictionaries also give the English plural of phoenix as either "phoenix" or "phoenixes".

But, I note that Wiktionary gives the Latin plural as "phoenices"... so if we're going to go with Asmodei (which in actual Latin should probably be Asmodaei), then I want me some phoenices! tongue.gif

in actual latin, the ending "a" becomes "ae" as plural, and "us" becomes "i" - "deus" becomes "dei." aei is just excessive.

Excessive? Don't even get me started on words like Phthisis (pronounced tie-sis).

But Asmodeus in Latin is spelled Asmodaeus. So the Latin plural of Asmodaeus would be Asmodaei. Take it up with Hadrian and his large collider.

The plural of Asmodeus? But Asmodeus is unique, so how could he have a plural form? It's a trick question! ph34r.gif

Does anyone a clue what the heck an asteryex actually is, by the way?
