QUOTE (REQUIRED TOOLS)
Borland Resource Workshop 4.5 (BRW)
MG11.dll (found in the Mordor data directory)
Image editing software (I'm fond of GIMP)

First, you're going to want to open your project in BRW. In this case, it's MG11.dll.

You should now be faced with the contents of MG11.dll. It contains most of the images you'll see while exploring the depths, including monster sprites, doors, water, fog, and more. BRW has trouble displaying what the actual images look like, but it can extract and import them with no trouble at all.

For this tutorial, we're mainly interested in changing what the monsters look like, so let's start by extracting them from the dll.

You'll need to click the MONS button under the Mordor header, then head to the resources menu and select Save resource as...

Go ahead and save the monsters file as a .bmp file. After that, head to your favorite image editor, open up your newfound .bmp, and bask in its glory! It should look something like this:

Now, you can make whatever changes you want to the monster images, as long as the resolution of the image doesn't change. (Sadly, this seems to rule out more than 90 monster images. sad.gif ) For this tutorial, let's make a moustached monster mod!

Once you've saved your modified bmp, go ahead and nix the file extension on it. (Ex: moustache.bmp becomes moustache) Head back into BRW.

END OF PART 1 (Silly image limit!)

You'll need to go to the File menu, then select Add to project...

Go ahead and select your modified monsters. When you click add, you should see a menu like this:

Mordor's the key resource type! Removing the file extension seems to be the key to getting the Mordor resource to show up here. Go ahead and select OK. Your new image should show up as something like MORDOR_1, like so.

At this point, you'll need to get rid of the old monster images. Go ahead and delete the MONS resource.

Now you'll need to rename MORDOR_1 to MONS, so the game knows where to find the new images.

Now the last thing to do is wrap up and save the modified MG11.dll file.

Drop the new MG11.dll file into your Mordor Data directory and enjoy!

I'm posting this at 3 AM, so please let me know if I've missed anything!

Sure, hope it helps.

I didn't go over this at all in the tutorial, but exescope is useful for peeking inside the files inside the .dll without extracting them.

Sweet!

Looks nice. I'll give it a try next time I'm messing with the dll!

I actually wanted to find a more intuitive resource editor than BRW, but I never did get around to it. The main barrier is that any editor needs to be able to handle 16-bit .dll files. Braindead has an old post that goes into it some.

Yeah, I missed a bunch of them. That's okay. It's the moustache inside that counts!

I've used the beta feelings mod off and on for a long time now, but I don't think I've seen a character to the end of the game with it. (It's been on my to-do list for far too long...) It was also a big reason why I decided to start playing with the monster images! That, and the Green Gremlins showing up red.
