Posted by: Braindead Dec 21 2010, 10:31 PM

site move has completed

if you notice oddities or things that don't work just let me know and I'll try to fix it

(i know the wiki doesn't work atm)

Posted by: barklight Dec 22 2010, 07:41 AM

May be related, but I've noticed what looks like a post rollback of several days? I am noticing several posts that I read last night are no longer present, including one of mine in off-topic tongue.gif

Looks like 3-4 day rollback mebbe. Unless it's only posts from the last 24 hours or something.

Posted by: rb8f Dec 22 2010, 09:11 AM

yeah, theres nothing after december 15th. not to worry though, its not like anything major happened, 'cept for braindead's birthday! laugh.gif it seems to be from when he backed it up. makes sense. i was worried when it said user blocked yesterday, i thought i said something wrong! then i got a friend to go on it, concluding that it was being moved.
is it still uni.cc? apparently so.

Sometimes I can't get to the site because the "account has been suspended."

Posted by: Braindead Dec 22 2010, 08:50 PM

account has suspended notice will be because you might still have the nameservers pointed to my old host there (where I didn't pay for the new month), normally should autoresolve itself in a few hours when your nameservers also point to the new ip address.

yes post rollback of a few days, I thought I leave the forum active after I took the backup so you guys could still talk smile.gif

Posted by: barklight Dec 23 2010, 05:23 PM

All makes sense then smile.gif

& another belated Happy Birthday happy.gif

Posted by: aardless Dec 23 2010, 10:44 PM

Hmm, is it me or did some threads went poof, like http://mordor.uni.cc/forum/index.php?showtopic=4497?
Edit: huh, can't see the content of a single thread, actually. crybaby.gif PC just upgraded on its own to Opera 11, though, so it may be me.
Edit2: no, not working on IE7 either. You sure the back-up worked? Looks like nothing survived. hairpull.gif
Edit3: most stickies and announcements are still there, but all other threads open as empty for me.

I'm having the same problem.

Posted by: Danjen Dec 24 2010, 06:55 AM

Er, same here

Posted by: rb8f Dec 24 2010, 09:55 AM

site is barren for me too. thats on mac, so it must be a bad backup.
that means we have to rebuild the site...
edit: everything was working, now its empty...
edit2: downloads are missing too......

Posted by: Braindead Dec 25 2010, 11:00 PM

damn that doesn't look good sad.gif

looks like some entries in ibf_posts didn't make it, I hope I've still got a good backup somewhere around... will look tomorrow

Posted by: Braindead Dec 26 2010, 05:06 AM

oh boy what a mess, went ahead and paid for another month at my old hosting to get a new backup, seems to look better now...

Posted by: Braindead Dec 26 2010, 05:23 AM

downloads working as well now

Posted by: Nudibranch Dec 26 2010, 06:38 AM

Thanks, Braindead. It's easy to take for granted all you've done for the Mordor community. I'm going to take this opportunity to thank you for being our generous host. ok.gif

Posted by: rb8f Dec 26 2010, 10:10 AM

its looking a lot better from my side.

Posted by: aardless Dec 27 2010, 08:08 PM

Echoing Nudibranch: thanks a lot Peter for all you do for the community! ok.gif

Posted by: Danjen Dec 28 2010, 09:54 PM

Everything looks good again! Thanks Peter!

I'm just curious. When do you think the wiki will be back up?

Posted by: rb10c Feb 17 2011, 07:39 PM

It's probably not going to happen soon. I'm sure BD is busy at the moment. Anything you want from the wiki can probably be answered on the forum.
If you want a detailed description of monsters or items, http://www.the-hendersons.net/mordor/ would be sufficient. Until then.

Are you just speculating, or do you have some source of information?

Posted by: rb10c Feb 18 2011, 04:11 PM

Speculating. I'm just a daily member, and I know how infrequent BD comes up. It's a highly educated guess. Moreso, aardless is getting less frequent too. I'm getting worried that this community is dying.

Edit (justifying)- It really appears that BD is busy, to not show up on the site he pays for. To extend, if he doesn't appear, It's probable that he has no time to time to reconstruct the WHOLE wiki.

Posted by: Danjen Feb 18 2011, 04:44 PM

The wiki is probably still there, somewhere. It's just a broken link in my opinion.

Posted by: rb10c Feb 18 2011, 04:55 PM

I think not. Moving to a new host leads to compatibility problems. Its a wonder the forums work. If it was a matter of shifting a link, it would have been done not long after the shift happened.

But, theres a wiki in all of us!

Zzzzzzzzz, ehrm what? I just skipped a week-end because I had other stuff to do. As long as I don't get too busy I'll always find a few minutes a week to say hi, and check that the forum is in order.
The community is certainly sleepy, it happens when you get hit by too much Old Age, we're looking for Dragon's Blood... wink.gif But seriously, M1 is a very old game I'm always amazed to see new regulars come in and keep the interest alive.

I'm not Braindead, but I'm certain the M1 community and this site will always be very close to his heart, he may not be very present at the moment but when you've been here for ten years, you just know it's the highs and lows of Real Life. He'll get back to the community much more assiduously when he feels like it.

Edit: regarding the wiki it's indeed probably just a link, I don't have an FTP client on this puter. After I'll have finished another project completely unrelated to Mordor I'll try to remember to get to it.

Posted by: rb10c Feb 19 2011, 12:42 PM

There's not a lot in the FTP thingy. But, that could be because i'm either doing it wrong, or don't have enough privileges.

Posted by: korexus Feb 21 2011, 08:14 PM

Thought I'd take a look at what might be causing the issues with the wiki. Note that I don't have FTP access to the site, this is based purely on external prodding. This is also probably very boring to most people, you may want to skip to the bottom, or ignore this post entirely. :-)

First, an attempt to load the wiki page.

CODE
wget http://mordor.uni.cc/wiki

Translation:
I try to load http://mordor.uni.cc/wiki as per the link at the top of the page,
The webserver informs me that this relates to a folder and makes me try again,
The attempt to load an index page for that folder results in a response that the page has moved to http://mordor.uni.cc/The_Unofficial_Mordor:_The_Depths_Of_Dejenol_Community
This page redirects me to the forums which load correctly.

Each of these steps can happen for several reasons, both at the webserver level or withing an executed script, let's investigate further.

First, what happens when I try to go directly to the index page of the wiki?
CODE
wget http://mordor.uni.cc/wiki/index.php
--2011-02-21 19:35:10-- http://mordor.uni.cc/wiki/index.php
Resolving mordor.uni.cc... 69.175.102.22

Connecting to mordor.uni.cc|69.175.102.22|:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK

That's exactly the same as if I tried to load the wiki directory, this doesn't rule out any causes but makes me think it's more likely that the initial 301 redirect is happening in php, not apache.

Ok, what happens if I try to load one of the other pages which was available through the wiki?
CODE
wget http://mordor.uni.cc/Main_Page
--2011-02-21 19:39:37-- http://mordor.uni.cc/Main_Page

Same moved temporarily, what about if I make up a random page?

CODE
wget http://mordor.uni.cc/gdlsjglskdfgjsd

Ok, it looks like the 302 to the forums is the server's response to not finding a page, therefore it's a reasonable bet that the other pages are not being found either. From what I remember, the wiki was a version of mediawiki, let's see if we can check a page directly.

CODE
http://mordor.uni.cc/wiki/index.php?page=The_Unofficial_Mordor:_The_Depths_Of_Dejenol_Community
--2011-02-21 19:54:53-- http://mordor.uni.cc/wiki/index.php?page=The_Unofficial_Mordor:_The_Depths_Of_Dejenol_Community
Resolving mordor.uni.cc... 69.175.102.22
Connecting to mordor.uni.cc|69.175.102.22|:80... connected.

200, great the page load right off, let's see what that looks like.
http://mordor.uni.cc/wiki/index.php?page=The_Unofficial_Mordor:_The_Depths_Of_Dejenol_Community

Hmm, not ideal but it is loading *something*

Conclusion.

The wiki itself is not broken, it seems to be able to load and access the database correctly, however the linking has gone a bit haywire.
I suspect that SEO friendly URLs are enabled in the wiki, (this puts the title of the page in the URL instead of the query string) this will cause the php to forward the user to pages like http://mordor.uni.cc/The_Unofficial_Mordor:_The_Depths_Of_Dejenol_Community because they look better. However the server is then not realising that these are pages connected to the wiki and treating them as not found. This part of the process should have been picked up by mod_rewrite rules in the .htaccess file.

I see three likely possibilities here:
1) The new server isn't set up to allow url overrides. This behaviour is turned off by default in apache so that may be the case, but it is fairly commonly used so that would be surprising.
2) The .htaccess file was not copied over from the previous server. This is not unlikely since on a linux platform files starting with a '.' are considered hidden, so it may not have been visible for copying.
3) The rewrite base is incorrect. This could happen if the webroot of the new server is different to that of the old server. I've tried a few alternative URLs like http://mordor.uni.cc/wiki/The_Unofficial_Mordor:_The_Depths_Of_Dejenol_Community and they also failed, so I imagine that this is the least likely option.

Hope that helps someone!

[edit]
After checking a mediawiki site I put together a couple of years ago, I realised that the correct parameter is title, not page. Check it out.

http://mordor.uni.cc/wiki/index.php?title=Black_Gremlin

:-D
[/edit]

Posted by: rb10c Feb 21 2011, 08:57 PM

Whoa.

What happens if you load the black gremlin page in your thingy?

Nonetheless, what I understood is that is that regardless of what is loaded, it loads 200 pages. That could be because it's a wiki, and does a parse search or something, but my knowledge on this site is zilch, and my knowledge on HTML is even less.

Korexus; you seem to be on more frequently, so if I may be so crass to suggest you have some time on your hands, perhaps you could be an admin-for-a-day, or some sort of semi-admin, with access to the site's core. That may not be okay, or we may need to wait for Braindead's approval.

Honestly, i'm just churning out ideas like an inventor on meth. Some are good, some are bad. I'll never know if they're good or bad without another person's two cents.

Posted by: korexus Feb 21 2011, 09:12 PM

"200" is http speak for "OK" it means the server found the page and is happy to produce it. In the same way that "404" means "can't find it" which is probably the status code you've seen most often.

Therefore if I did a wget of the black gremlin page I'd also get a 200 response code, which is good. The reason I resorted to command line tools was that all the redirecting was getting awkward to follow in my browser, nothing more.

Anyway, this means that all the wiki pages should have survived the move and should still be available as they were before, so long as you can remember the title. As most pages had the names of monsters as their titles this is be possible though a bit annoying.

Ideally someone with administrative access needs to either turn of SEO URLs for the wiki or get the mod_rewrite functioning properly. I'd be happy to give either of those options a go (I have plenty of experience administering LAMP platforms and have made a whole one mediawiki site previously) but I do not have sufficient access to the site to do so. - As you can imagine the core workings of the site are kept out of reach of most visitors!

 I'm so stupid. 200 pages.

Just tried it. It works! As soon as you posted I tried tengu, and it didn't work... I then tried Giant Centipede and it worked. Giant centipede worked, but had no data. Then thought i'll try tengu again. done Tengu; worked! Now, tengu then worked? What the heck? Nonetheless, its now working! Odd how it didn't .

But lower tengu didn't work, then did. I may have been hazy in my writing.

Posted by: korexus Feb 22 2011, 10:06 PM

Hmm, tengu doesn't work for me unless I capitalise the 't'. Maybe you've got some case-insensitive caching going on in your browser?

The wiki is still there, one day it'll magically re-appear smile.gif

I probably just move the wiki to the main folder, saves me to fix the whole redirection issues in the first place. smile.gif

Give me a shout if you need a hand. I do server admin for a job and am at home with regular expressions so may be able to help. :-)
